Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone
The hustle and bustle of city life faded behind us as the Ample Solutions Team embarked on a monumental 3,456-kilometre odyssey to conquer the 2024 Ample Solutions Gobi Desert Challenge. This wasn’t just a personal test of physical endurance; it was a celebration of camaraderie and the pursuit of shared dreams.
We traversed the vast, unforgiving desert landscape, marvelled at the breathtaking night sky, and discovered an unwavering strength in each other’s company. Now, let’s delve into the inspiring stories of our “Ample Warriors” and explore the essence of the Gobi Challenge experience, where the human spirit triumphs amidst the harsh desert environment.
1. A Desert Flower Blooms with Courage
The Gobi Challenge began with a heavy heart for Sandy. Exhaustion overwhelmed her on day one, forcing her to collapse at a checkpoint. She revealed a battle with a recent high fever, leaving her physical strength depleted. Concerned, I suggested medical attention and a potential withdrawal.
However, that evening, a familiar figure emerged amongst the final arriving participants. It was number 22X – or so I thought. My heart nearly leaped out of my chest when I realised it was Sandy, number 228! She hadn’t quit! Fueled by the determination of her fellow team mates, she found the strength to continue, joining forces with other women to complete the remaining course.
The following two days unfolded with Sandy transformed into an unstoppable force, charging ahead and conquering the entire challenge. “The thought of giving up terrified me,” she confessed. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to start again if I stopped.” Her unwavering spirit not only inspired herself but also left a lasting impression on all of us. Ultimately, our team secured the Shackleton Award, a testament to our collective effort. But Sandy’s story, her indomitable spirit, became the most cherished chapter etched in our hearts.

2. The Bonfire’s Unexpected Stars
Exhaustion painted Kelsey’s face after day one’s gruelling race. She returned to camp, seeking much-needed rest. However, that evening, the bonfire party witnessed a complete transformation. Kelsey, alongside another teammate, took the stage by storm with a sizzling street dance performance! Their energy and crisp moves were infectious, instantly igniting the entire venue.
Their ten-minute performance pulsed with such passion that it captivated the entire audience. Thunderous applause erupted, solidifying their act as the most electrifying highlight of the night. Later, Kelsey revealed their secret – a hidden practice session for an hour and a half before the party, all for the sake of delivering an unforgettable performance.

3. The Gobi’s Unsung Hero: Jim
Jim, an outdoor enthusiast seasoned in desert and snow mountain treks, chose to prioritise team success over personal glory in the Gobi Challenge. His leadership proved invaluable in navigating numerous challenges.
Prior to the race, Jim meticulously organised activities like a Hong Kong hiking training session and a ten-peak Shenzhen mountain challenge. These initiatives not only fostered physical strength but also bolstered team spirit and camaraderie. He strategically assigned tasks based on individual strengths, set clear goals for both team and individual awards, and consistently motivated us to maintain high morale.
During the race, Jim cleverly divided our camp group into a vanguard team and a backup team. The vanguard charged ahead while Jim stayed behind, leading the less experienced backup team with a steady pace, all while carrying the team flag high. Even under the scorching desert sun for hours on end, he never faltered.
On day two, faced with rule changes and his own knee pain, Jim’s commitment remained unwavering. He insisted on leading the backup team to avoid compromising team morale. This same day, a female member struggled physically and was unable to walk. Jim offered comfort and encouragement while summoning the team doctor. He then personally escorted her back to camp, ensuring her safety.
Day three showcased the remarkable cohesion fostered by Jim’s leadership. Each member had a clear role, assisting one another with backpacks, water, and even carrying injured teammates. Just as we were poised to be the first team to finish, Jim received news of urgent support needed at Camp 3. Without hesitation, he rallied us to return and assist. Several team members even doubled back from the 48th flag to the 28th checkpoint, offering continuous support and ensuring every Camp 3 member crossed the finish line.
Kudos to Jim, our team leader, for his immense responsibility, unwavering leadership, and dedication to our collective honour!

4. One Team, One Dream: Achieving Full Camp Completion
Our Camp group (Camp 3) dominated the Gobi Challenge, leading in both individual and team awards. However, our ultimate goal – having every single member cross the finish line – faced a challenge. On the third day, reflecting on the past days’ experiences, we reaffirmed our commitment to full camp completion. We made a crucial decision: teams that completed the challenge would return to assist struggling teammates, ensuring everyone reached the finish line before the 2 pm deadline.
This spirit of unity shone brightly. Zora’s foot injury didn’t slow us down – teammates took turns carrying her. Exhaustion threatened Eve, but I used trekking poles to guide her forward. Tala, burdened by her backpack and the heat, succumbed to heatstroke. But there were Estelle and Nicole, rushing to her aid. Every Camp 3 member rose to the occasion, selflessly helping those in need.
With unwavering encouragement and support, we achieved our goal: full camp completion. Everyone persevered, demonstrating an incredible feat of teamwork. The Gobi Challenge solidified our belief – through unity and collective effort, we can conquer any obstacle.
